Chapter Five

ALARICK

“What you did back there shouldn’t have been possible,” I said, watching Jean pace several feet ahead.

This discussion was long overdue, so I’d brought us somewhere we could talk. The magical cave lay hundreds of feet below the surface, the rock walls lit by thousands of tiny glowworms. I’d visited once in my youth when the responsibilities of my crown seemed overwhelming. The cavernous space gave off a sense of peace, as if no one and nothing existed outside of it.

When Nathair first appeared and Jean was hurt, I hadn’t questioned why Jean had been able to heal himself—despite knowing I wouldn’t have been so lucky. Nathair had the power to kill me, as did Jean. Nathair planned to assassinate me. Jean was my dearest friend and perhaps… I shook that thought from my head. Now was not the time.

Anger and frustration bubbled to the surface. “How is it possible I know as much about what Nathair is as I do you?”

Jean whirled around and tore the bandage from around his eyes. “You want to know what I am? Then you will meet the monster inside!”

“Jean—”

Jean threw his arms out, his face turned to the heavens before he burst into green fire. I gasped and took several steps back as shimmering black scales emerged from the flames. They were large and armored, and at first I thought dragon, but no, this was… far more terrifying. The tip of Jean’s tail reminded me of a lion, the tufted fur at the tip green. That same fur traveled up his tail, and I tried to peer inside the green flames when Jean sprang forward, his exceptionally long body coiled. He almost looked as if he were made of three creatures—a dragon, serpent, and lion.

“King of the Serpents,” I whispered. That was only a formality. A description of how his kind had been referred to in myths and legends. Jean was not a king, but he was… a prince.

A basilisk prince.

So many magical creatures had become myths, but I had seen them all in my time on this Earth. Except for basilisks. They were true creatures of legend. Mostly because anyone unfortunate enough to cross paths with a basilisk would never live to tell the tale.

A hiss drew my attention up to Jean’s massive head, a combination of serpent and lion, with fangs bigger than me. Green fur surrounded the spikes and scales behind his head, almost like a lion’s mane. The same fur lined his jaw. Flat scales extended from the top of his head, standing tall in the shape of a crown. He was the most terrifying creature I had ever laid eyes on, and the most beautiful.

Laid eyes on.

My heart splintered, the cracks tearing wide before my heart broke. Tears filled my eyes as he lowered his head before me. I placed my hand on his brow beside his eye. “Tell me you didn’t.”

Jean closed his eyes and turned his head away from me.

“No, you look at me,” I commanded.
